Magazines Part II

1) Image Based - There is one or a few main subjects that the photo is based around. The subject may be smiling or shot sideways, either way they're obviously the main focus. The subject may also be a landscape or type of food depending on the type of magazine.

2) Illustration Based - Illustrated covers used to be the only option, but now they're used to be something funny or out of the ordinary. These covers present a illustration or digital drawing as the main subject.

3) Type Based - These are rare, but not as rare as Illustration based covers. These normally have a bold typed message that stands out.

4) Concept Based - These normally present a strong, shocking, or funny message. These covers can be a mix of images, illustrations, and text. The key is to have a cover that is instantly understandable to your viewers. These covers are semi rare, but common in business magazines and news weekly magazines.

Words and photos are both necessary and important parts of magazine covers. Without photos a cover would be unattractive and most likely wouldn't catch anyone's eye. Without words a cover would be pointless; it wouldn't potray your brand name or explain the photo at all.
